A Time for Courage

A Time for Courage is a captivating story of the lives of four soldiers struggling with their own personal convictions and human frailty at a time when the country is engaged in a great Civil War.

In this book, you’ll meet the idealistic Private Madison Jefferson Payne, an eighteen-year-old black Union soldier who pens an inspiring letter that urges black men to join the Union army and fight for their freedom.

You’ll ride with the dastardly Captain Daniel Barlow on secret missions behind enemy lines. You’ll have a front-row seat into his complex heart as he espouses the belief that black soldiers are inferior, and you’ll witness his secret that will be known only by you.

You’ll sit with Lieutenant John Davenport, a former college professor who has found his lifelong passion in education, as he wrestles with internal conflict over accepting orders to start a school for black soldiers, a decision he knows is unpopular with many white officers or continue to fight in a war that only brings inevitable death and destruction to humanity.

You’ll journey with Major James Hightower, a Confederate cavalryman, as he toils with leaving his terminally ill wife and young son to rendezvous with the legendary General Nathan Bedford Forrest and fight for a losing cause and a senseless war that could no longer be won.

Destiny will bring these soldiers to a small, insignificant place called Fort Pillow near Memphis, Tennessee. On April 12, 1864, they will fight a little-known battle in which honor and survival hang in the balance, and the only thing that can tip the scale is their courage.

Welcome to the deep woods.     Psychology controls the biology of our brain. At the witch trials in Salem, when the accused were brought into the court, adrenaline and cortisol would have shot into the bloodstream of the spectators. Neurotransmitters would have surged through their brain. Their very brain waves would have shot up from 12 to 40 cycles per second. A P300 brain wave would have screamed “ALERT”. Their heart jumped.  A chill went up their spine. The girls began to shriek “Witch, Witch!”     We know this because the same thing happens in America today among those watching a Hollywood horror movie about witches, zombies, demons, murder and more. In varying degrees thi...

The Revenant's Mark
