Angela, Bill's lover, is acutely ill in the emergency department at the university hospital where they both work. He is the successful and influential academic surgeon with the aristocratic family pedigree. She is the nurse from an immigrant Italian family. She knows too much, and she could ruin his reputation. She needs emergency surgery. She has no choice but to trust him with her life.
